Gary M. Cohen is Vice President, Co-Founder and Partner at Grossman Yaffa Cohen and a nationally recognized trial lawyer who has devoted more than four decades of his career to representing individuals and families harmed by medical negligence. Gary has served as first chair in approximately 150 trials and has handled complex medical malpractice and catastrophic injury cases throughout Florida and in several other states.
Gary’s practice encompasses the full range of medical malpractice matters, including strokes, birth-related injuries and deaths, failures to diagnose cancer, delays in diagnosing or treating infectious diseases, surgical negligence, preventable medical complications and other forms of inappropriate medical care. His work combines a detailed understanding of medicine with extensive courtroom experience and a commitment to uncovering how and why a patient was harmed. He has successfully resolved significant claims through settlement and trial, including numerous multimillion-dollar matters.
In 2024, Gary and the GYC trial team secured a $100 million medical malpractice verdict on behalf of a child who suffered a permanent, life-altering injury during a negligently performed circumcision. The verdict, the largest of Gary’s career, reflected years of work to hold the physician accountable and obtain resources to help meet the child’s lifelong needs. For Gary, the case represented more than a financial recovery; it was an opportunity to protect other patients and reinforce the consequences of repeated medical negligence.
Gary also represents families in wrongful death matters involving delayed diagnosis and treatment. His current work includes a Palm Beach County lawsuit alleging that healthcare providers failed to timely recognize and treat signs of sepsis during an emergency department visit. Across his practice, Gary focuses on cases in which careful investigation and rigorous medical analysis can expose preventable failures and drive meaningful accountability.
A respected leader in the trial bar, Gary was inducted as a Fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers in 2025. Membership in the Academy is limited to a select group of accomplished trial lawyers from the United States and other countries. He is also a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, whose Fort Lauderdale Chapter honored him as its 2026 Lawyer of the Year for his skill, professionalism and commitment to the highest standards of trial advocacy.
Gary has served in leadership roles within the Broward County trial bar and on a national committee of the American Association for Justice. He has lectured throughout the United States on medical malpractice litigation and taught medical malpractice at St. Thomas University College of Law as a professor for several years. He is also a Fellow and an EAGLE member of the Florida Justice Association, supporting efforts to preserve access to the civil justice system.
Gary is admitted to practice in Florida state courts, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida and the Supreme Court of the United States.
Gary’s guiding philosophy is rooted in persistence, preparation and the belief that injured people deserve the opportunity to stand on equal footing with powerful healthcare systems and insurance companies. He is driven to do better for every client and to fight back for individuals and families navigating some of the most difficult circumstances of their lives.
